Growing up in Canada, with a hockey stick in my hand, I loved to spend hours on the rink in freezing temperatures. Little did I realize how important how movement and freezing temperatures are for mitochondrial biogenesis. Summers were spent working out on the farm, at camp, or getting my bike dirty. From an early age, I always felt my happiest when I was playing outside and moving around. This passion for playing and moving guided me into a degree from the University of Winnipeg in Kinesiology.
My early years in the sport science field were devoted to human performance and muscle physiology. Understanding the science of sports science helped me race in 5 Ironman Triathlons. Like any journey in life, it takes twists and turns. Zig zagging across the street like a paperboy on his bike. Over the last seven years I have specialized in sarcopenia, chronic disease and exercise oncology.
Low skeletal muscle mass is an emerging issue in oncology. For the last two years I’ve been dedicating myself to our students at An Oasis of Healing Integrative Cancer Treatment Centre in Arizona. Addressing primary and secondary sarcopenia, cancer related fatigue and cognitive impairment teaching our students how to restore health. Learning is neural plasticity. Each journey begins with one simple step. How you move your body will affect how you move through life.
I’m so excited to be a part of HEAT 2024 and the brand-new Journey with Oasis of Healing Asia.
