DR. STEEN LARSEN

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Steen Larsen
BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Steen Larsen is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and a Visiting Professor at the Medical University of Bialystok, Poland. He earned his B.Sc. in Chemistry in 2007, M.Sc. in Human Physiology in 2008, and Doctor of Medical Sciences in 2014, all from the University of Copenhagen.

Since beginning his academic career as an Assistant Professor in 2015, Dr. Larsen has established a strong laboratory specializing in mitochondrial analysis across different tissues. His research has resulted in more than 100 scientific publications in leading journals, including Diabetologia, Nature Communications, Acta Physiologica, and The Journal of Physiology. He is also regularly invited to speak at international conferences such as the European College of Sport Science and the American College of Sports Medicine.

His primary research focuses on how lifestyle-related interventions, including exercise, diet, and medication, affect whole-body metabolism and mitochondrial function, particularly in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. His laboratory mainly conducts studies in human subjects, with additional research using animal models when relevant.

His current research explores the effects of semaglutide treatment, exercise training in patients with type 2 diabetes, statin treatment combined with exercise, Coenzyme Q10 supplementation in older adults, and antidepressant medication on mitochondrial function.

In addition to his research, Dr. Larsen teaches medical students and supervises bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students. The Larsen Group focuses on human integrative physiology in health and disease, with a special interest in mitochondrial physiology and how it is affected by disease and exercise training, from whole-body function down to the mitochondrial level.
